Privacy Policy

MeshiMemos is operated by David Hellman, who is the data controller — the person responsible for how your data is handled. This privacy policy explains what we collect and why, both on the website meshimemos.com and in our iPhone and Android apps.

The Website (meshimemos.com)

Information You Provide

  • Email address: When you join our waitlist or sign up for early access, we collect your email address to notify you about our launch and updates.
  • Research-chat participation: If you book a research chat with us, we may collect additional information you voluntarily share during our conversation, to help us understand your needs.

Information Collected Automatically

  • Analytics data: With your consent, we use Pendo to collect anonymised usage data such as pages visited, time on site, and interactions with our website. This helps us understand how visitors use our site and improve their experience.
  • Traffic source data: We track how you found our website (e.g. from social-media posts) using URL parameters, to understand which channels are most effective.

How We Use Website Information

  • To notify you when MeshiMemos launches or has updates
  • To contact you about taking part in user research chats (only if you've expressed interest)
  • To improve our website and future product based on usage patterns
  • To understand which marketing channels bring visitors to our site

The Apps (iPhone and Android)

In the app you tell us who's eating and what's in your fridge, and get three dinner ideas. Here is what the app collects and why:

  • Household and fridge: how many adults and kids are eating, and the ingredients you type in. This is what we start from when making the three ideas.
  • Dietary needs: a free-text field where you can describe your household's dietary needs, for example allergies. Because the text can include health details, we treat it as sensitive and only use it with your explicit consent — given by ticking the box next to the field — and then only to shape the dinner ideas. If you're signed in, the text is saved with your family details so it can be filled in for you next time. You can change your mind at any time: unticking the box means the text is not used, and clearing the field also removes the saved copy in your family details. That only affects future ideas — a dinner you have already saved keeps the text as it looked when you saved it. To get rid of that copy, delete the saved recipe or your account.
  • Account: your email address and password. The password is never stored in readable form — only one-way encrypted (hashed); we cannot read it.
  • Saved recipes: when you save a dinner we keep the dish with its ingredients and steps, plus a snapshot of the family details it was made for — the adult and kid counts and your dietary-needs text as it read at the moment you saved. Saving is only possible when you're signed in.
  • Feedback on ideas: when you ask for another idea and say why, we keep the reason you picked, what you wrote, and which dinners you had already been given.
  • Suggestion records: for each round of ideas we keep the fridge list, the adult and kid counts, and the ideas that were generated. Your dietary-needs text is never stored here — the copies of it live in your family details and in any dinner you saved, as described above.
  • Usage counters: how many rounds of dinner ideas you've used, so our fair-use limits work.

Using the App Without an Account

If you use the app without an account, your phone creates one random code, stored in the phone's secure storage. We never store the code itself — only a one-way scrambled version that cannot be traced back. We cannot link it to you as a person.

If you enter dietary needs without an account, the text is used for that request only — we never store it.

When the app is used without an account, our server sees your IP address as you ask for dinner ideas. We never keep it in our database — it is held briefly in the server's memory, at most an hour, purely to stop abuse, and it is never written to disk, never logged, and never shared.

AI Processing

When your dinner ideas are generated with AI, we send your fridge list, the adult and kid counts, your dietary-needs text (only with your consent) and what you wrote when asking for another idea to Anthropic, our AI provider. See Anthropic's privacy policy.

We never send Anthropic your email address, your IP address, or your device code.

Anthropic processes the data above on our behalf, as our AI provider. That processing may take place outside the EU/EEA.

The ideas are generated automatically and can contain mistakes. Always check allergens and ingredient labels before cooking.

What We Don't Do

This is about our own apps and our own server. The services we rely on — see "Third-party services on the website" below — handle data under their own terms; a web host, for example, always sees a visitor's IP address.

  • We show no ads.
  • We never sell your data.
  • Our apps contain no third-party analytics tools.
  • Our database never holds your IP address.
  • What you type in — fridge, dietary needs, feedback — never appears in our server's technical logs.

Why We're Allowed to Handle Your Data

Data-protection law asks us to have a reason — a legal basis — for each kind of data. Ours are:

  • Your account, and the dinner ideas you ask for: we handle these so we can give you the service you came for. That is our agreement with you.
  • Your dietary-needs text: only with your explicit consent, because it can include health details. You can take that consent back at any time.
  • Keeping the service running, keeping it free of abuse, and making it better: this is our legitimate interest, and it covers suggestion records, feedback, usage counters and the short-lived IP check.
  • Website analytics: only with your cookie consent, which you can change whenever you like.

Cookies and Tracking

We only set analytics cookies after you give consent through our cookie banner. You can change your preference at any time by clicking "Cookie Settings" in our website footer.

Essential cookies required for the website to function do not require consent.

The apps use neither cookies nor analytics tools.

Data Retention

How long we keep things:

  • Email address: until you unsubscribe from the waitlist or delete your account.
  • Sign-ins: a sign-in (session) expires after 90 days of inactivity.
  • Suggestion records and feedback: there is no fixed time limit today — we keep these while we build the service. If we introduce a limit, we will update this policy.
  • Usage counters: kept, so the usage limits keep working.
  • Website analytics: analytics data from the website is retained in aggregated, anonymised form.

Deleting Your Account

When your account is deleted, we remove your profile, your family details including the dietary-needs text, and your saved recipes. Suggestion records and feedback are unlinked from your account at the same time.

The usage counters remain, but are no longer linked to anything that identifies you.

There is no delete button in the app yet. To delete your account, email privacy@meshimemos.com and we'll do it for you.

Your Rights

Under the GDPR (the EU's data-protection law), you have the right to:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
  • Correction: Request that we correct any inaccurate information
  • Deletion: Request that we delete your personal information
  • Restriction: Ask us to pause our use of your data while something about it is being sorted out
  • Object: Tell us to stop using your data where we rely on our legitimate interest
  • Take your data with you: Get the data you gave us in a common file format, or ask us to send it on to another service
  • Withdraw consent: Change your cookie choices on the website, or untick the dietary-needs consent in the app — at any time
  • Complain: Lodge a complaint with IMY (Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten, the Swedish data-protection authority) if you think we handle your data wrongly
